Ajay Thomas, Senior Managing Director joined FHN Financial in August 2017 to serve as the firm’s National Head of Public Finance. He joined FHN Financial, a division of First Horizon Bank, from William Blair, where he also served as Head of Public Finance Banking and later in his tenure as Head of the Municipal Securities Group that included management responsibility of Municipal Sales, Trading, and Underwriting. Mr. Thomas has over 20 years of experience in the Municipal Securities industry executing transactions across sector disciplines for a variety of municipal issuers across the country totaling billions in senior managed par amount. A recognized lead banker in the Texas Municipal Market, Mr. Thomas has served in the role of Senior Manager for issuers across the State of Texas particularly for education issuers, municipalities, counties and state agencies for infrastructure. Mr. Thomas began his Municipal career as an with JP Morgan and then after obtaining his law degree joined Morgan Stanley as an Associate in the firm’s Municipal Securities Division in the summer of 2002 rising in the organization to become the firm’s Southwest Regional Manager from 2007-2010. Due to his successful record of building and growing, profitable municipal securities franchise, Mr. Thomas was recruited by firms to expand and grow their efforts in Public Finance. This record of achievement has led Mr. Thomas to leadership management roles with Raymond James, Baird and William Blair prior to his arrival to FHN Financial. With a mandate to expand the Municipal Securities Group into a strong regional presence in the Municipal Industry, under Mr. Thomas’ leadership, FHN Financial continues to impress and has expanded FHN Financial’s presence into several key regional markets offering financing solutions across sectors with a focus on public school districts, state and local government and infrastructure finance.
Mr. Thomas received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Southwestern University, where he was selected as one of 40 undergraduate students from the United States for the London School of Economics General Course Program where he specialized in International Relations and Economics. He later earned his Master in Public Policy degree from Harvard University, and his J.D. from the University of Texas. Mr. Thomas currently serves as a Trustee for Southwestern University and is a Member of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Advisory Board for the Taubman Cent.
